Season: Summer Year: One
Major Weather: The summer is starting to show signs of being one of the worst yet, with temperatures already climbing and the water beginning to dry up in the furthest reaches of the South.
Name: Akanthys Gender: Stallion Species: Horse Age: 13 Height: 17.0hh Body Type: Warmblood Coat Color/Markings: Black Pearl Mane/Tail Color:burnished bronze Eye Color: Brown Scars: Several; none more noteworthy than the others. Physical/Mental Abnormalities: N/A
Akanthys is fairly heavy in build, tending towards a baroque type: thick through his neck and barrel, with thick hair and a slightly convex profile. A naturally sturdy bone structure supports as much muscle as he can fit under his skin, and his bulk is easily his most notable physical trait. Akanthys has no white markings, but more than enough dark scars marring his pearly, burnished bronze coat to make up for a lack of natural flash. His long mane and tail are often matted and tangled, sometimes torn away in places. His eyes are a plain, muddy, light-brown color.
personality
Akanthys has a brutally savage nature, and exhibits unquestioning obedience to whichever leader he's sworn his allegiance to. He enjoys killing as a cynical pursuit of martial occupations; he finds hypocritical the notion that legal killings (as by a soldier) are any different than criminally prosecuted murders, and participates in the former to highlight the injustice of a system which legalizes murder in any instance.
He possesses an extreme contempt for the romantic concept of chivalry and glory in battle. He is taciturn, brutal, unchivalrous, and frequently callous, but not completely without compassion; he absolutely loathes bullies and has an enormously weak spot for the meek (which he will always attempt to hide).
Akanthys is heavily dependent on psychotropics in general, as a way to stymie the flood of self-hate and general loathing for the world which would otherwise certainly cripple him. Ironically, he is prone to overdosing when he finds a new source after a long dry spell, which incapacitates him much in the same way his raw emotions might.
Thoughts of love or of romantic partners never cross his mind except as fantasies of purely physical relations; he has had the equine equivalent of one-night-stands and is convinced that anything more is impossible. One of his greatest insecurities is the fact that his own cultivated self-image of thuggish, rogue brutality often elicits feelings of fear or anger from strangers before anything else. On some level (continuously and religiously suppressed by him) other horses' fear of or disgust with him is deeply hurtful.
As an adult, Akanthys has enjoyed most when he's able to take a position as bodyguard or a mercenary, even if (rather hypocritically) he does so in the service of a great bully. He's big enough and tough enough now that most civilized horses attempt to avoid conflict with him, but if the opportunity to fight someone arises, Akanthys takes immense pleasure in causing pain and havoc -- even if the outcome is against him in the end. A profession which encourages that tendency is naturally attractive to him.
Akanthys is completely disavowed of the political depictions of the North-South conflict, and happily passes his time hating everyone equally. He enjoys roaming as a rogue occasionally for-hire, actively cultivating a bad reputation and vehemently denying any despair, depression, or loneliness in himself.
He is absolutely self-destructive, nihilistic, and entirely pure at heart.
history
Akanthys was originally named because he was born looking a bit purply, and the plant family acanthus tend to have sweet little purple flowers. It turned out to suit him well, not because he retained his lavender foal tones, but because plants in the acanthus family also tend to be rather spiky little plants.
He was raised in a Northern herd which ranked birth status, piety, and lawfulness as a horse's most valuable attributes. Unfortunately, his immediate family's particularly martial nature tended to cultivate bullies and abusers more than anything else. Akanthys was taught, indirectly, that as long as one is protected by one's birth status, piety, and what seemed to be an arbitrarily determined "lawfulness," one could commit true horrors -- against the bordering herds to the South, or even against their own -- free from reproach.
Because he was a fairly small foal, and because his coat color was unique within his herd, he was often the target of the older colts' boredom-fueled cruelty. He learned from a very young age that to look different and strange is to be treated as such, no matter how innocent the heart within. It is this horrific treatment he endured as a youngster from which his categorial intolerance for bullies stems, and his maniacal cynicism with regards to organized martial law is a direct result of the herd law which allowed his tormentors to go unpunished (and even rewarded, in some instances) for their crimes.
The moment he was old enough to flee his family and swear himself to someone else's, he did, and he's never seen his blood family since.
