She drew in a breath, her body shuddering as life refilled her lungs. Lids fluttered as though they were straining to open. It was an odd feeling that coursed through her, as if she lived even after death had claimed her. Where was the water? She should have been drenched. She shouldn't be dragging air into her lungs, but water. She remembered the choking sensation, as her deprived lungs had sucked in everything but that life giving air. Her heart skipped a beat within her chest, and even as her eyes remained closed and her body remained somewhat unconscious, she realized something was wrong. Where was death? Why had it betrayed her? With great effort she shifted, succeeding in only moving her head a bit before it dropped back to the earth. She strained to open her lids, to glimpse the world and find out what had happened. They seemed so heavy as they lifted, the blue around her irises darkening as she took in the strange and seemingly lifeless terrain that lay before her. Sucking in a breath, she lifted her head weakly and came to the realization that this was Earth. Had she survived the ocean? Had someone dragged her up from the murky depths to save her life? Groaning, she pulled her front limbs from beneath her body and shifted about as she attempted to stand up.
Her weight was so unfamiliar to her, as she lifted her body from the dried ground and tested her strength. Her elegant frame curved in a semi-circle as she peered around her wooded enclosure. "Fer-" She began, faltering as her voice seemed otherworldly to her own ears. "Ferdinand?" It was a scratchy sound that felt so out of place on her lips. The silence remained, time seeming to drag miserably as she hung her head in defeat. He was still dead. How could he be dead while she yet drew breath? It wasn't fair! Her brown form moved forward, her shapely limbs dragging her as though she weighted twice as much as she did. Her eyes were wide with fear and trepidation, her mind unable to comprehend what had happened. She remembered the water encasing her and the strange grip of death dragging her to the impenetrable blackness. She could remember it all and yet here she stood, as if she hadn't even died. As if, as unrealistic as it was, she had dreamed it all.
She shook her head, her black locks flying to the sides of her face, a she tried to find some explanation that made sense. Before she could, however, a thought gripped her; cutting her to the quick. Were Alodian and Gotlum still alive? Her spine stiffened, the curvature of her body going taught with sick resignation. It had only been this morning that Ferdinand had been slaughtered and she had attempted to sink to her death, hadn't it? Her eyes narrowed and she threw a suspicious glance to the top of the hills before her, as though she would see one of them watching her. It was a silly notion, yet her form shuttered as she took a step back in fear. Why was she still alive? Would she never escape them? Why wouldn't fate let her be with Ferdinand? It was so cruel! Yet she stood in a form so unfamiliar to her, as though she had been reborn. It was the same body, she knew. She held the same common coloring and spoke with the same voice she had been born with. Yet there was some new quality that hadn't existed before. She felt as if she was different, even if she couldn't quite grasp how she was.
His eyes were trained on a heap of horseflesh, beached there in the sand. He was curious. Was it alive? Was it dead? His mind mulled it over. On the idealistic side, what if the creature was alive? He could be seen as a kindly soul looking to help and maybe if they suited his needs, he'd feel inclined to offer shelter. Then again, on the practical side, there might be something of value on this mass' person or information. He huffed in exasperation once he realized his curiosity was going to get the better of him. His eyes quickly assessed a path down the craggy cliffs and then he was off, descending quickly and carefully. He breathed a moment of relief once all four feet were on the solid ground. They found purchase in the sand as his weight caused them to sink down briefly before lifting them up again to move across the beach.
Something unusual happened then though. The mass moved. Well, it looked like his opportunistic dream was coming to an end. He huffed and put on his altruistic facade of concern. He dropped his head to the horse he had quickly realized was a drenched mare and nudged her gently. "Are you alive in there? You do know that horses aren't meant to swim in the ocean, correct, little fish?" He smirked a bit and looked at the mare with concern. She had finally stood to her feet, though he had some concerns about her stability.
"Are you okay? Do you know what happened to you?" He was probably speaking to a loon for all he knew, but he was sure her response would give him some kind of indication shortly.

The words spoken to her echoed in her mind and she found herself turning to cast her eyes to the creature that stood before her. He was much taller than her and his frame was a patchwork of gold and white. Oddly enough, she didn't feel fear at his presence but was comforted by the idea that the land wasn't as deserted as she'd thought. She sucked in a gentle breath and straightened her smaller frame, her neck arching as she considered the male before her. She was torn between the truth and a lie. Did she tell someone she had hoped to kill herself by drowning in the water? Honestly, had he known Alodian or Gotlum, he'd probably have chosen death as well. She blinked, uncertain of how to respond. When she finally found her voice, she spoke quietly "It was the only option I had left."
His next question had the arch in her neck unbending as she peered up at him and sucked in an unwitting breath of sea water and male. "My mate was killed. I chose drowning in the ocean rather than waiting for what his murderers had planned for me." There was no shame in her voice. She had made a hard decision to end her life rather than submit. There was still a niggling of regret in the back of her mind. Ferdinand deserved life more than she did. She'd done nothing to deserve being alive right now. Rather than linger in her loss or what should have happened, she straightened herself and gave him a half-hearted smile.
"It's not little fish." She spoke up quietly, finding the name somehow amusing despite her ordeal. "My name, that is. I'm Donanza." She moved a step away, still shaky on her own legs. She didn't want him to think she was weak, she pulled her head up and flashed her blue eyes at him as if she wasn't tired or weak at all. "May I have yours?" She asked curiously, her voice still reserved and quiet. Her white nostrils twitched as she watched him, quivering either from her nerves her the nearness of an unfamiliar stallion. She wasn't sure which, but she waited and watched, uncertain what his intentions were or if he would even respond.
