appearance
Reference Image:
With a rather short and slender frame, Liresa isn't much in the way of physical attributes. Long, trim legs lead to a lean body, which leads to a long neck with an arch and a streamlined head. Her coat is a gray base with white speckling from nose to rump. Her legs darken to black, but end in gray socks on all four feet. Her eyes are brown, her mane and tail both solid black. Her stride in calm times is an unhurried sort of stroll, moving slowly from place to place as she guides the herd in search of food and water, and her carriage is that of pride: she is the Lead and she knows it, and she won't hesitate to back up her decisions with tooth or hoof. Only the slightest limp mars her walk, a hitch in the right rear from an injury that happened soon after she took over leadership.
personality
Liresa is a very straightforward character: she stands upon her herd's tradition as she stands on her four legs, for they are what guides their movements and actions to other herds and outsiders. She won't tolerate deviations from it, and though young, she has proven herself a strong, reliable Lead.
She's fairly no-nonsense and with a dry sense of humor that rarely makes an appearance, Jokes and tricks are for foals, not grown mares and stallions. What good are they? She has more important things to worry about than having fun.
At the same time, she is a doting mother and she does her best to show each member of the herd that she cares for them as individuals- their safety is all part of the herd's continuation, and she would fight anyone to ensure that they remain unharmed.
history
Liresa was born to the leads of the Valley herd: her mother, Letira, and her father Sonal. Because of the stricture the herd had long since adopted, her birth, as the first-born daughter to the lead mare, put her in the position of heir when Letira died, or became unable to lead for whatever reason. Liresa wasn't exactly spoiled, but she was born knowing that she would be important to the herd.
From her sixth month, when she had grasped speech, Letira began to coach her daughter in the ways of leadership. Dealing between the mares of her own herd and those of other Northern herds were at the base of her education. She learned her mother's tactics well, and carried on most of them to the letter.
At two years, with the herd's approval behind her, the mare left the family to find a lone stallion. It was their strong belief that no horse could properly lead without having first learned how to raise young. The three-year old stallion she met was all too easily eager to court her, and Liresa stayed with him for several days, until her season ended, and then slipped away in the early morning to return to the Valley Herd.
Her foal was born in due time, a black-and-white colt who was an instigator from the start; she named him Riphel. He gave Liresa all manner of trouble, from throwing tantrums when the play didn't go exactly as he'd thought it should, to playing tricks on the older horses when their guard was down. It earned him more than one warning nip, more than one scolding- and these did absolutely nothing to curb his spirit.
Incorrigible, was a word often used to describe him, and yet beneath the mischievous demeanor lay true affection for his mother- if no other horse. Until his second year he remained close to her, following close behind wherever she went, and only when he reached his second year did things change.
That year, a challenger came; the same stallion who was Riphel's father. He fought Sonal for leadership of the herd and won, driving off the older stallion before turning his attention to the younger males of the herd. Riphel and a couple other two-year-old stallions were targeted and driven off. Liresa only watched; Riphel had no need for her any more, and he was more than old enough to make his own way.
For a short time he continued to hang around the herd, but soon enough his typical urges took hold again; the last Liresa saw him was sundown one day; the next, he was gone.
Shortly afterward, her mother fell prey to a cougar; an ambush, a spring, and a dip in the earth that resulted in a broken leg for the herd's Lead. Sonal drove the cat off, but there was nothing to be done for the old mare, and as the herd departed, they all knew what fate awaited her.
And Liresa became Lead. But her rise wasn't without trouble; despite their laws, another mare challenged Liresa for the rank. A fight between the two broke out, and though Liresa managed to win, she was injured, a hard kick that damaged the muscle of her right hind leg and broke skin. It healed, leaving her with a scar and a limp in the leg. When she would have cast out the challenger, however, to prevent a repeat of the incident, the new stallion over-rode her and allowed the other mare to remain.
There have been no new challenges, but Liresa is on her guard, hardly daring to turn her back for a moment for fear that she might lose her spot- a situation that she has no training for and that she is doing her best to handle.
